K-Line has started calling at Malta Freeport

20/04/02

K-Line has started calling at Malta Freeport on its AES 2 Express Service, following its decision to use Malta as a hub for the East and West Mediterranean.

Its ships will call at Malta in both directions.

The first container ship, m/v ‘Weser Bridge’, carrying 4,000 Teus, berthed alongside Terminal One yesterday.

The Asia Express Service is part of the Transpacific and Asia/Europe-Mediterranean Service which was launched recently by an international consortium made up of K-Line and Yang Ming.

A spokesman for Malta Freeport said that on the Asia Express Service, K-Line would be deploying four new 5,500 Teus post-Panamax container vessels.

The vessels will be delivered by September this year and will have a service speed of 25 knots.

The new 280 metre vessels will strengthen K-line’s fleet, enabling it to provide its clients with the best transportation available in the industry, with the most competitive transit time and extensive port coverage.

The spokesman said the Asia Express Service will increase Malta Freeport’s regular global network connections to 95 ports.

Mr.T.Suzuki, general manager of K-Line, visited Malta on the occasion of K-line’s first call.
